Regarding Libraries: The Danger of Book Bans
Hey all,
I am very very late starting this post, and have had it in drafts for a year, but a huge bunch of months ago, Alberta had book bans on LGBTQ books, and the U.S. has book bans as well. We are living in a dystopian hellscape where reading is "dangerous". This is dangerous for everyone, but it is also dangerous for libraries as well.
It is a violation of freedom of speech and libraries are at danger of closing if books are banned and authorities tell libraries which books to carry in their branches. It is dangerous for critical thinking and for learning and development. There is nothing wrong with LGBTQ people and there is nothing wrong with books about LGBTQ people as well.
The book bans don't just target the LGBTQ community, but anything that is not white, hetero, cis interests, especially white cis male interests. If it pertains to racial issues, cultural issues, anything that conservatives fear, it is gone. Trump fears what he doesn't understand and he is ruining the U.S. which includes the book bans. People cannot be informed about things they want to learn about if it is not there to access.
Libraries are a third space that is very valuable. You can't ban books that are positive for the community.
