Autism Acceptance #5: Your disability isn't a bad thing!

 Hey all,

In my other autism acceptance posts, I mentioned how autistic people are capable and worthy of respect and things that non autistic people are. It is so true!

There are people out there, such as RFK Jr. who view autistic people as burdens and something that needs to be cured, like it is something worse than cancer. Autism is not a disease and even though being autistic has its challenges, being autistic, being disabled, having a disability, they are not bad things! Even if non autistic people make autism out to be a big bad thing, it isn't!

I may be autistic, but myself and other autistic people have hearts of gold! Even if I get in a crappy mood, I might just be overwhelmed! Same with other autistic people! Autistic people love to dream, to create, to love, to care, to be able to exist without stigma. It is 2025 and a lot of people still don't understand even the basics about what being autistic looks like, and it is different for every autistic!

Not all autistics have the same support needs. Sometimes, even the same autistic person can have different needs at different times! I can be quite independent and I do well in a lot of areas, but I do also have mental health issues and get overwhelmed!

Other disabilities apart from autism, whether physical, cognitive, developmental, hearing, sight, etc. They are not bad things! Disability is not a dirty word! I will say it again and again! At some point, a lot of the population, especially in their senior years, will have some sort of disability! End the stigma around disability, autism and mental health!
