Decluttering #15: Just because it doesn't spark joy, doesn't mean you get rid of it!

In my previous post in the decluttering series, I mentioned about things not sparking joy doesn't mean you have to get rid of it. There are things that are practical in your homes that might not be your favorite thing in your home or even something you think a lot about, but you use all the time. I mentioned in the previous post about a potato masher I have that is special to me, but your potato masher might not be the top of your spark joy list, but you use it a lot, so it is practical and you do not need to declutter it!

In this post, I'm going to go over some other examples of things whether kitchen or in another room that you wouldn't necessarily declutter even if it's not something you love.

Things that may not spark any or a lot of joy but you use all the time:

cutlery

bowls

cups

(keep in mind that if you have too many of any of the things on this list you can pare down what you have!)

pens

towels

dental care such as toothpaste and toothbrush and mouthwash (if your toothbrush is old, consider using it for cleaning things in your home!)

soap

toilet paper

paper towel

facial tissues

kitchen sponges

cleaning supplies

dish soap

cleaning accessories such as brooms, mops, dustpans (if they are broken or in bad condition you can declutter them to the appropriate waste bin)

tweezers

bandaids

first aid kit stuff such as gauze and medical tape

ice packs

i don't think anyone would really list any of these examples as the top of their spark joy list off the top of their heads! Minus those who have a favorite beauty routine and use their favorite soap, or if you are me, I love my blue Dawn dish soap and while it's not the top of my list of sparks joy, it is both useful for me for dishes, cleaning, and it is gentle on my eczema on my hands.

Things can be useful and still be kept! Sparking joy is a main component in keeping something but sometimes it's not just literally "sparking joy", it is the usefulness of the item and how lost you would be without it!
